The politics of political signs 'Tis the season — election season. You may begin to notice political signs popping up in yards and along streets. Political signs promoting candidates and various state and local initiatives may also begin popping up throughout neighborhoods and commercial areas. Political signs are a strong and long part of the democratic system, but as with other signs, they are not allowed in certain locations. Signs advertising a political candidate or ballot initiative may only be displayed on private property. The property owner’s permission should be obtained prior to placing the sign on the property. Political signs are not allowed in a public park or in a public right-of-way, i.e., on power poles, traffic signal poles, in medians or in the tree lawn between the street and a sidewalk. Call the Littleton Community Development department at 303-795-3748 with questions, or to report a violation. Thanks to everyone involved in the various campaigns this year, for their help in honoring these rules. |

Have you cashed your TABOR refund check?
In late 2007, Littleton City Council voted to refund the $1.1 million TABOR overage to Littleton residents. The refund was to go to anyone who owned property and/or was a registered voter as of 12/31/2006. During the last two weeks in December, the city issued 39,000 checks to Littleton residents. As of May 31, 2008, about 5,000 of these checks have not been cashed. If you are not in possession of your TABOR check, search for your name on the Unclaimed TABOR Check search page, then contact the Littleton Finance Department. |

Littleton businesses support recycling
Colorado residents can drop-off used compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and mercury-containing thermostats for recycling at any Ace Hardware store in the state of Colorado, including the Ace Hardware in Broadridge Shopping Center at Ridge and Broadway. When the collection bins are full, the entire bin will be recycled — the contents and the container — to ensure no mercury leakage. The bulb-recycling program is for CFLs only (not fluorescent tubes), and is intended for residential use, not for businesses or the commercial industry. Fluorescent tubes in household quantities are collected by the Littleton/Englewood Wastewater Treatment Plant. Liquid mercury, and mercury-containing devices also accepted. Call 303-762-2600 for information and drop-off hours. |
