Faith - Many Beliefs, So Much in Common

The heart of religion is faith and Richard Steckel has traveled throughout the world with his wife, photographing children who practice their faith in many ways; these photos and the stories behind them will be shown in a presentation by the Steckels on Tuesday, September 11, 7:00-8:30 p.m. The Steckels believe that if we learn more about other peoples’ faiths, intolerance can be replaced with understanding. Richard Steckel has an international reputation as an author, consultant, speaker and photographer. His photographs were recently exhibited in London where 120 leaders of religious organizations met to discuss mutual cooperation. He and his wife have also received recognition from Prince Charles for their work and in 2003 they received the global Tolerance Award from The Friends of the United Nations.

Now Showing @ Bemis!

Join us for one of these family-fun events on the library’s big screen:

Saturday, September 15, 2:00-4:00 p.m.

Forced to retire from NASA so he could save his family farm, former astronaut-in-training Charles Farmer (played by Billy Bob Thornton) pursues his lifelong dream by building his own rocket in his barn. In the face of opposition from his small-town community, the FAA, and FBI, he remains determined to reach his goal and instill in his children the courage to pursue their own dreams, no matter the odds.

Kid’s Friday Flick - Sept., 21, 2:00-3:30 p.m.

School’s out early so join us for snacks and this fun Walt Disney movie. When a crook runs over 11-year-old Preston’s bike and shoves a blank check into his hand, Preston fills it in for a million dollars! Join the spending spree of a lifetime as Preston tries to hang onto the cash before the FBI and the bad guys come after it. For children in grades K-5.

Afternoon Art/Craft Programs

Please join us for various art projects. These programs are primarily directed toward mature library patrons who would like to have hands-on experience with art techniques.

Little People Presentation

Come meet a family of Little People on Monday, September 24 at 2:00 p.m. Chris and Barb are Little People who fell in love, married and had a darling child who is a little person as well. They recently had another child who is of average size. Learn about how the dwarf gene occurs and learn about the life styles of a small person living in an average-sized world.

You will be able to take home the recipes as well as taste Chef Hoyt’s culinary creations.

The Hollywood Librarian

Celebrate Banned Books Week, September 29 through October 6, by coming to a special presentation of the new film, The Hollywood Librarian, to be shown twice on Tuesday, October 2, at 2:00-3:30 p.m. and at 7:00-8:30 p.m. This entertaining documentary shows how librarians and libraries have been portrayed in American films - often in a very humorous way. Interviews with real librarians are interwoven with movie clips and the documentary shows how librarians have fought for our freedom to read. Every person who comes to a showing of The Hollywood Librarian will receive a free book and his/her name will be entered to win a $25 gift certificate from the Tattered Cover Book Store.

Big Read at Bemis: Fahrenheit 451

Bemis is joining the Arapahoe Library District and Aurora Public Library in offering the Big Read program in October and early November. The libraries received a National Endowment for the Arts Big Read grant to offer local programs; additional funding was also provided from each library. The concept is simple: have as many people as possible in the community reading the same book at the same time. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury is the book that has been chosen for the Big Read program at Arapahoe County libraries. This classic novel depicts a future society where reading is forbidden. Numerous copies of the book will be available for checkout at Bemis. Watch for a variety of special events related to the Big Read program coming in October and November.
